The Stadia controller is a unique piece of hardware that will connect, via WiFi, to the game directly that is running on the Stadia servers. Using this technology google will eliminate any between button presses.
Along side this technology the Stadia controller will also of course, allow for wired gameplay and USB-C port charging. The controller will also support USB-C accessories and headsets and yes… The Google Stadia controller will have a 3.5mm headset jack for other headsets with or without a microphone.
In addition to the buttons and features you would expect from your average controller, the Stadia controller will have 2 new buttons. The ‘Capture Button’ and the ‘Assistant Button’.
The Capture Button
The Capture Button will allow players to instantly be able to capture moments while gaming. This will include, sharing videos to YouTube, streaming AND sharing game states / saves using a feature called ‘State Share’. Game states will allow players to send game states to other users so that other user can experience the same moment in the game. Personally, this is something I am very excited about.
The Assistant Button
The Assistant button will allow players to ask google for assistance using the controllers built in microphone without leaving the game. Stuck on something? Ask Google.
One great feature about Google Stadia is in fact, despite having it’s own controller, existing devices (controllers, keyboards and mouse’s) can be used with Stadia on PC, mobiles, laptops and tablets. To play on a TV the Stadia Controller along with a Google Chromecast Ultra will be required (This will be included with the Stadia Founders Edition).
On release the Stadia Controller will be available in 3 colours. Clearly white, just black and wasabi. A limited night blue controller is available with the ‘Founders Edition’ should you preorder the equipment now.
